10 Reasons YOU Want to Become A Dog Foster Parent

Give Fostering a try!

Together, we can save the lives of shelter dogs.

I’m sure you all know the importance of Fostering A Dog in need, but do you know why?

Because when you foster, a dog who may otherwise be forgotten or even worse, euthanized at an over-crowded shelter, is now put in your care, providing a temporary home for them until they find a LOVING HOME.

Here are 10 REASONS why you’d want to become a Dog Foster Parent and how you can get involved!

1. Help Dogs In Need

Every foster enables more and more lives to be saved. Did you know you’re saving lives directly when you foster? There is nothing more satisfying than holding your Foster Dog and knowing that because of your help, they will be able to grow up and find a family.

And letting go is not as hard as you think when you know they are going to a great home and you can then Help Get Another Puppy off the euthanasia list.

2. Help The Shelters By Fostering Dogs

It’s no secret that animal shelters in the US are More Crowded Than Ever Before, so when you foster, you also create more space in the shelters for other dogs in need. You also give them a chance to thrive instead of waiting for adoption in the shelter.

3. Make Friends

It’s not as easy to meet new people and make friends in person now that everything stays on the internet, but when you foster, you create a stronger community around yourself, with your Foster Case Manager, your Fellow Volunteers and the Dog Rescue you foster with, then before you realize, you actually become a part of the community too!

4. Provide A Safe and Loving Environment For Dogs

A foster may show that puppy the first true love and affection they’ve ever received, which could help relieve their stress and in turn, make sure they have the best chance of finding an adopter.

As a foster, you also get a chance to discover how a rescued dog would react in a home environment.

5. Help Your Local Rescues

Some rescues like us don't have physical shelters so they need many fosters to keep things running. Actually, fostering is one of the most needed roles in almost All Animal Rescues.

When you foster, it’s a win-win situation that benefits you, the rescue, and pretty much everyone involved.

6. No Commitment, No Problem!

Wouldn’t you want a temporary puppy cuddle without the full responsibility of pet ownership? Then Fostering Is Perfect For You! Not every animal lover can make a lifelong commitment to having pets, and fostering has proven to be a great alternative.

7. Give Your Pet A New Friend

Taking in a foster can give your pets exposure to a new friend and it’s a good way to continue socializing your own dog.

Many of our fosters have said that their dogs really start to thrive on new levels with a foster around, and by helping the dogs socialize, you also further increase their Chances Of Being Adopted.

8. Teaching Responsibility to Your Children

It may not seem like it, but taking in a foster actually teaches your children responsibility and a little bit about dog ownership. As our Chief Operations Officer at Path of Hope Rescue, Chentel puts it the best!

I wanted to foster because it allowed my son and I do to something good and helpful together. We have more than enough space to open our home up if it means we have to help save their lives.

9. Help Take Care Of Puppies

Many Puppies need your support if they're too young to be adopted, and sometimes they are even too young to be separated from their mom. So by providing them with a comforting home, they get to be prepared for what’s to come.

And many dogs may need time before they’re ready for adoption, be it Recovering From Surgery or in need of some extra training. In those cases, you’d also be caring for them before they get adopted.

10. You’ll Learn A Lot From Your Foster Dog

Fostering is a growth experience for us to try something new and discover what we may love. Guess they’re not joking when they say you learn new skills when you foster!

For first-time fosters that never had a dog, It would also help prepare them in the event they want to Adopt A Dog in the future.
